Coaching Drivers to Be Safer
The SmartAsset system helps drivers coach themselves through in-cab alerts and the DriverShield mobile app, which gamifies safe driving with scores and prizes. However, some drivers may still need additional, hands-on coaching. This workflow is designed to guide managers through that process.
Workflow
To access the Driver Behavior Dashboard, navigate to the Driver Behavior Events tab in the top menu.
The dashboard provides an overview of triggered events for your selected vehicle or driver, along with the status of the camera. Each recorded event includes six seconds of
footage before and after the trigger. You can easily filter these events by date or type using
the options at the top of the screen.

Driver Analytics
Driver Behavior Events > Driver Analytics > All Drivers (Drivers tab must be
selected)
Access the Driver Analytics Dashboard to view each driver's Daily Score Ranking, which is
calculated according to the criteria set by your administrator’s policy. Once established,
these scorecard parameters apply uniformly across the fleet to maintain consistent
standards. The dashboard provides a comprehensive summary of all driver scores for the
selected day, offering a clear starting point for effective coaching. Begin your coaching
process by reviewing the Daily Score Ranking and focus on drivers who may need guidance
based on their performance.

Filter by Driver
To coach a specific driver, simply click their name in the Daily Score Rankings to filter the
Dashboard and view only their data.
This will present a summary of the driver's performance, highlighting both areas for improvement and positive behaviors. During a coaching session, it’s essential to acknowledge the driver’s strengths along with areas that need attention.

For instance, if the driver earned full points for Speeding and Policy
Compliance but lost all points for Basic Driving Habits and Critical Safety Events, a best
practice is to start and end the conversation on a positive note to ensure the driver remains
motivated and receptive to feedback.
Access Coaching Center
To review specific events with the driver during their coaching session, navigate to the
Coaching Center tab in the left-side panel. This will provide a summary of the driver’s
monthly events, organized by category.
Next, choose the event category you want to review with the driver to display all recorded
events for the month. In the top left panel, you'll see a breakdown of the total events
categorized by New Events, Pending Coaching, and Coached Events. This helps ensure you
select events that haven't been used for coaching yet, while also keeping you informed
about which events the driver has yet to review in their DriveShield application.

To review an event during your coaching session simply click the event and it will begin
playback. After you discuss the behavior with the driver you can mark it as “Coached” and
add a comment to summarize the coaching details shared with your driver.
Once you've finished reviewing events with the driver, return to the Coaching Center and
select "Mark as Coached" for the event grouping. This action will mark all events within that
grouping as coached for both the coach and the driver. Additionally, these events will be
marked as coached in the DriveShield application, keeping both platforms updated.
Emerging Patterns
Driver Behavior Events > Driver Analytics > Select Driver > Emerging Patterns
It’s always best to end the coaching session by reviewing the driver’s Emerging Patterns to
compare their most recent performance to their historical performance. The goal is to
ensure the driver is improving in all categories which are displayed in this view.
The Emerging Patterns section compares events generated during a recent period with
those from a historical period, analyzing metrics such as events generated per day, events
per mile, or the total number of events. You can toggle between comparison modes at the
top of this section and modify the recent and historical periods using the date range pickers in the upper-right corner.

Additionally, you can generate a detailed report on drivers’ or vehicles’ emerging patterns by clicking the Reports icon on the map screen and searching for emerging patterns. This report can be exported in either PDF or Excel format.
