OBD devices plug into a vehicle’s OBD-II port to collect vehicle data and (often) act as a mobile gateway for BLE sensors. Most issues relate to power, port access, installation placement, or network connectivity.
For troubleshooting instructions, please see below.
Issue 1: OBD Device Not Powering On
Possible Causes
-
Loose connection
-
OBD port has no power
-
Device defective
Steps
-
Unplug the device, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in firmly
-
Turn ignition ON (some vehicles require engine running)
-
Test the OBD port with:
-
Another telematics device, or
-
A diagnostic scan tool
-
-
Try the device in a different vehicle
If it doesn’t power on in multiple vehicles, send email to support@smartasset.biz for additional troubleshooting.
Issue 2: Device Powers On but Shows Offline
Possible Causes
-
Poor cellular signal
-
Initial boot still in progress
-
Platform assignment issue
Steps
-
Wait 5–10 minutes after first install
-
Idle or drive the vehicle for 5–10 minutes
-
Move the vehicle outdoors (clear sky view)
-
Confirm the device is:
-
Activated
-
Assigned to the correct vehicle
-
-
Power-cycle the device (unplug → wait → replug)
Issue 3: Intermittent Data or Delayed Updates
Possible Causes
-
Device hanging loose
-
Metal shielding under dash
-
Port movement while driving
Steps
-
Use an OBD splitter or extension cable (recommended)
-
Secure the device up under the dashboard with zip ties
-
Keep device:
-
Away from metal brackets
-
Clear of wiring bundles
-
-
Retest by driving the vehicle
Issue 4: Vehicle Data Missing or Inaccurate
Possible Causes
-
Vehicle compatibility limitations
-
Ignition state not detected
-
Splitter cable wired incorrectly
Steps
-
Verify supported data points for the vehicle (odometer, etc.)
-
Confirm ignition is being detected correctly
-
If using a splitter:
-
Ensure OEM port is fully connected
-
Ensure gateway is on the correct leg of the splitter
-
-
Power-cycle device and retest
Issue 5: Driver Reports Warning Lights or Scan Tool Issues
Possible Causes
-
OBD port conflict
-
Older vehicle sensitivity
Steps
-
Install an OBD splitter cable
-
Ensure OEM diagnostic access remains available
-
Reboot the vehicle (key off → wait → restart)
-
If warnings persist, remove device and send email to support@smartasset.biz
Issue 6: BLE Sensors Not Being Detected (If Applicable)
Possible Causes
-
Distance too far
-
Sensors installed on metal
-
Device not mounted securely
Steps
-
Confirm BLE sensors are active and assigned
-
Verify sensors are:
-
On non-metal surfaces
-
Within typical vehicle proximity
-
-
Secure the OBD device higher under the dash
-
Drive vehicle near the BLE-equipped assets
