OBD II Troubleshooting

Overview

This guide provides troubleshooting steps for an OBD-II GPS Tracker or Gateway that is not reporting, reports intermittently, has inaccurate GPS data, or is not detecting BLE sensors.

Most issues are related to power, installation, cellular coverage, GPS reception, or vehicle compatibility. Complete the steps below before replacing the device.

Common Symptoms

  • Device is not reporting
  • Vehicle does not appear on the platform
  • Device reports intermittently
  • GPS location is inaccurate or unavailable
  • Gateway is not detecting BLE sensors
  • Vehicle data is missing or incorrect
  • Dashboard warning lights appear after installation

Step 1: Power Reset the Device

Many communication issues can be resolved with a simple power reset.

  1. Park the vehicle in an open outdoor area with a clear view of the sky and strong cellular reception.
  2. Turn the vehicle OFF.
  3. Unplug the OBD-II tracker from the vehicle's OBD-II port.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the tracker securely.
  6. Start the vehicle and allow 5–10 minutes for the device to reconnect.

If the device begins reporting normally, no further troubleshooting is required.

Step 2: Verify the Device Has Power

Confirm the tracker is fully seated in the OBD-II port and the ignition is ON (some vehicles require the engine to be running).

Verify:

  • LED indicators are illuminated.
  • The device is securely connected.
  • The OBD-II port is not damaged.

If the device does not power on:

  • Verify the vehicle battery is charged.
  • Inspect the OBD-II port for bent or recessed pins.
  • Test the port with another OBD-II device or scan tool, if available.
  • Test the tracker in another vehicle, if possible.

If the device does not power on in multiple vehicles, contact support@smartasset.biz.

Step 3: Verify the Installation

Inspect the installation and confirm:

  • The tracker is fully inserted into the OBD-II port.
  • The connection is secure and not loose.
  • The OBD-II port and connector pins are free from damage.

If using a Y-cable or extension cable:

  • Verify all connections are fully seated.
  • Inspect the cable for damage.
  • Ensure the gateway is connected to the correct leg of the splitter.
  • Secure the cable and device under the dashboard to prevent movement while driving.

Step 4: Verify Cellular and GPS Connectivity

If the device powers on but remains offline or reports intermittently:

  • Confirm the vehicle is in an area with strong cellular coverage and a clear view of the sky.
  • Avoid testing inside buildings, parking garages, under heavy tree cover, or beneath metal canopies.
  • Allow the device 5–10 minutes to establish a cellular and GPS connection.
  • Drive the vehicle for several minutes if needed to trigger reporting.

Step 5: Verify Vehicle Communication

If the device is online but vehicle data is missing or inaccurate:

  • Confirm the vehicle has been started and driven.
  • Verify the ignition is being detected correctly.
  • Ensure the device is activated and assigned to the correct vehicle in the platform.
  • If using a splitter, verify it is installed correctly.

If available, connect a scan tool to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Vehicle communication faults may prevent the tracker from receiving vehicle data.

Step 6: Inspect the Device

Inspect the tracker and any installation accessories for signs of damage, including:

  • Cracked or broken housing
  • Bent connector pins
  • Water intrusion
  • Burn marks
  • Damaged cables or connectors

Replace the device if physical damage is found.

Step 7: Check for Dashboard Warning Lights

If dashboard warning lights appear after installation:

  • Turn the vehicle OFF and restart it.
  • If using a splitter, verify the OEM diagnostic connector is fully seated.
  • Remove the tracker to determine whether the warning lights clear.

If the warning lights remain after removing the tracker, diagnose the vehicle before reinstalling the device.

If the Issue Persists

If the device still does not report after completing all troubleshooting steps, contact support@smartasset.biz and provide the following information:

  • Vehicle year, make, and model
  • Device serial number (if available)
  • Description of the issue
  • Troubleshooting steps completed
  • Photos of the installation, if applicable
