Installation of OBD Gateways

OBD gateways plug directly into a vehicle’s OBD-II port to collect vehicle data and act as mobile gateways for nearby BLE sensors. Proper installation ensures reliable vehicle data, BLE sensor communication, and uninterrupted power. For installation instructions, please see below.

Step 1: Locate the OBD-II Port

The OBD-II port is typically located:

  • Under the dashboard on the driver’s side
  • Near the steering column
  • Below the fuse panel

Step 2: Connect the Gateway

Option A: Direct Plug-In (Quick Install)

  1. Insert the OBD gateway firmly into the OBD-II port
  2. Ensure the connection is fully seated

Note: This method is fast but less secure for long-term installs.

Option B: Splitter or Extension Cable (Recommended)

  1. Plug the splitter or extension cable into the vehicle’s OBD-II port
  2. Plug the OBD gateway into the female end of the splitter
  3. If applicable, reconnect the OEM OBD port to the splitter
  4. Route the gateway up under the dashboard

Step 3: Secure the Gateway

  1. Mount the gateway under the dashboard using zip ties
  2. Ensure the device:
    • Is mounted as high as possible
    • Is not hanging or loose
    • Is clear of pedals, steering components, and airbags
  1. Bundle and secure excess cable

Step 4: Power On & Initial Boot

  1. Turn the vehicle ignition ON (engine running recommended)
  2. Allow 2–5 minutes for the gateway to power up
  3. Observe LED indicators for:
    • Power
    • Cellular or network connection
    • BLE scanning activity

Step 5: Verify in the Platform

  1. Log into the platform
  2. Confirm the gateway appears online
  3. Verify:
    • Correct vehicle assignment
    • Vehicle data reporting (ignition, movement, diagnostics)
    • BLE sensors are detected nearby

BLE Sensor Coverage Notes

  • OBD gateways act as mobile BLE collectors
  • Best performance occurs when BLE sensors are:
    • Installed on non-metal surfaces
    • Within typical vehicle proximity (trailers, tools, light equipment)
