Understanding key dashcam and telematics terms helps users navigate the platform, interpret data, and communicate clearly across teams. This glossary defines common devices, features, alerts, reports, and safety concepts to support drivers, managers, administrators, and installers.

Use it as a quick reference for daily operations, troubleshooting, and onboarding.

A

Activity Time- The amount of time equipment is actively operating (movement, vibration, or engine runtime detected).

AI Feature- Artificial intelligence that automatically identifies risky behaviors like distraction, tailgating, or cell phone use.

Alert- A notification triggered by predefined rules such as speeding, harsh braking, geofence entry/exit, or device disconnects.

Asset- Any tracked item in the system, including vehicles, trailers, or equipment.

Asset Assignment- Linking a tracker or BLE sensor to a specific piece of equipment in the platform.

B

Beacon Interval- How often a BLE sensor sends a signal to a gateway.

BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)- Low-power wireless technology used by sensors to broadcast equipment presence and status to nearby gateways.

Breadcrumbs- Sequential GPS points that create a visual history of an asset’s travel path.

C

Calibration- Alignment process that ensures dashcams accurately detect lanes, distances, and safety events.

Check-In- Automatic confirmation that equipment has been detected by a gateway within range.

Check-Out- When equipment leaves a yard or gateway range and is no longer detected.

Clip Retrieval- The process of viewing or downloading recorded video segments from the platform.

Coachable Event- A flagged safety incident identified for manager review and driver coaching.

Compliance Monitoring- Tracking adherence to company safety policies or regulatory requirements.

Continuous Recording- Ongoing video capture that records footage in rotating segments.

Custom Report- A user-defined report built using selected filters, metrics, or timeframes.

D

Dashcam- An in-cab or outward-facing camera that records driving activity and safety events.

Device Assignment- The process of linking a telematics or camera device to a specific vehicle or asset.

Diagnostic Data (DTCs)- Engine fault codes pulled from the vehicle that identify maintenance or mechanical issues.

Downtime- Time when equipment is not operating or not being used productively.

Driver Coaching- Review process using telematics and video data to improve driving behavior and safety performance.

Driver ID / iButton - Authentication tools used to associate trips and safety events with specific drivers.

Dual-Facing Camera- Camera that captures both the road and the driver simultaneously.

E

Engine Hours- Total runtime of a vehicle or equipment engine, commonly used for maintenance and utilization tracking.

Equipment Productivity- Measurement of how often and how efficiently equipment is used during work hours.

Event Recording- Video automatically saved when a safety trigger occurs (impact, harsh braking, speeding, etc.).

Exception Report- Report highlighting behaviors or metrics that fall outside normal operating thresholds.

F

G

Gateway- A powered device that listens for BLE sensors and transmits their data to the platform via cellular or Wi-Fi.

Geofence- A virtual boundary around a location that triggers alerts when assets enter or exit the area.

Group- A logical organization of vehicles, equipment, or users for filtering and reporting (branch, crew, region, etc.).

H

Heartbeat- Regular status signal sent by a device to confirm it is online and functioning.

I

Idle Time- Time when the engine is running but the vehicle or equipment is not moving.

Ignition Status- Indicator showing whether the vehicle or equipment is powered on or off.

Incident Review- Formal evaluation of safety events or accidents using video and telematics data.

In-Cab Audio- Optional microphone recording of interior vehicle sound.

Installation Location- Recommended mounting position on equipment to ensure optimal signal and protection.

J

K

L

Last Seen- Timestamp showing when equipment was most recently detected by a gateway or GPS tracker.

Live Map- Real-time view of equipment locations within the platform.

Live Tracking- Real-time monitoring of vehicle or asset location on the map.

M

Maintenance Schedule- Service intervals based on engine hours or time to keep equipment operating safely and reliably.

Manual Trigger- Button press by a driver to manually save video footage.

Motion Detection- Sensor-based recognition of vibration or movement used to determine equipment usage.

N

O

P

Ping / Blip- How frequently a device sends location or status updates to the platform.

Platform- Centralized software system used to manage fleet, camera, and telematics data.

Playback- Map replay showing historical routes and trips over time.

Preventable Event- A safety incident that could have been avoided with safer driving behavior.

Productivity Report- Report showing usage hours, idle time, and activity trends.

Proximity Detection- Automatic detection of BLE sensors when within gateway range.

Q

R

Recovery Mode- Increased tracking frequency used to locate missing or stolen equipment.

Risk Behavior- Driving actions that increase accident likelihood, such as speeding or distracted driving.

Route History- Historical movement path for GPS-tracked equipment.

S

Safety Score- Numerical rating based on driving performance and safety events.

Scheduled Report- Automatically generated report delivered at set intervals.

Sensor Battery Life- Estimated operational lifespan of a BLE sensor battery.

Signal Strength (RSSI)- Measurement of how strong a BLE or cellular connection is between devices.

Single Sign-On (SSO)- One login that provides access to multiple applications.

Scorecard- Summary view of driver or vehicle performance metrics.

Status (Online/Offline)- Indicates whether a device is currently communicating with the platform.

T

Telematics- Technology combining location tracking, wireless communication, and equipment data collection.

Trip- Movement of a vehicle from ignition on to ignition off.

U
