Troubleshooting: Non-Reporting Dash Cameras

This guide provides troubleshooting steps for resolving connection issues with your dash camera.

If the issue persists after completing these steps, please email support@smartasset.biz.

Step 1: Verify the Camera Is Receiving Power

Verify that the camera is receiving power by checking that the Power LED is solid green while the vehicle's engine is running. If the Power LED is solid green, proceed to Step 2.

If the Power LED is not solid green while the engine is running, inspect the cable connections between the camera and the power source (vehicle diagnostic port or wiring harness) to ensure they have not become disconnected or damaged.

There are three locations where power can be interrupted:

  • OBD-II port, JBUS port, or the hardwired cable connection supplying power to the vehicle.
  • Power box connected to the selected power cable (OBD-II, JBUS, or Hardwire). (Select models only.)
  • MDVR connection to the power box. (Select models only.)

Next, perform the following checks:

  • Inspect all cables for damage. If any cables are damaged, contact Sales to purchase a replacement.
  • Verify that the power cable is securely connected to the diagnostic port if using an OBD-II or JBUS power harness.
  • Verify that the diagnostic port is supplying power using a multimeter:
    • Set the multimeter to DC Volts.
    • Place the black probe on pin 4 or 5.
    • Place the red probe on pin 16.
    • Confirm that at least 12 volts are present.

  • To verify that a hardwired connection is supplying power:
    • Set the multimeter to DC Volts.
    • Place the black probe on the vehicle's metal chassis.
    • Place the red probe on the red wire termination tap from the camera harness.
    • Confirm that at least 12 volts are present.
    • Start the vehicle.
    • Place the black probe on the vehicle's metal chassis.
    • Place the red probe on the orange wire termination tap from the camera harness.
    • Confirm that at least 12 volts are present.

If voltage is not present, a blown fuse is the most likely cause.

If the fuses are intact, the wiring is undamaged, and the camera still does not receive power, email support@smartasset.biz and include the troubleshooting steps you have completed.

· If the device has power, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Verify the Vehicle's Location

Verify that the vehicle is in an area with good cellular coverage and has a clear view of the sky.

Make sure the vehicle is not in any of the following locations:

  • Underground parking garage
  • Parking structure
  • Building with a metal roof or metal walls
  • Remote area with poor or intermittent cellular coverage

If the vehicle is in an area with good cellular coverage and a clear view of the sky, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Verify the Camera LED Status

Verify which LED indicators are illuminated and whether they are solid, off, or flashing. Compare the LED status to the descriptions below.

Power LED (Green)

Status Meaning Next Step
Solid The camera is receiving power. Normal operation. Proceed to the GPS LED.
Off The camera is not receiving power. If the troubleshooting steps in Step 1 did not resolve the issue, contact Support.

GPS LED (Satellite Icon)

Status Meaning Next Step
Off Normal operation. The camera has established a GPS connection. No action required.
On The camera is searching for a GPS signal. If the vehicle is in an open area with a clear view of the sky and the LED remains on, contact Support.

Network LED (Globe Icon)

Status Meaning Next Step
Off Normal operation. The camera is connected to the cellular network. No action required.
On The camera is searching for a cellular network connection. If the vehicle is in an area with good cellular coverage and the LED remains on, proceed to Step 4.

Recording LED (Camera Icon)

Status Meaning Next Step
Off Normal operation when the camera is not recording an event. No action required.
On The Recording LED will illuminate temporarily while the camera is recording an event. This is normal behavior. However, if the LED remains on continuously after the event has ended, it may indicate a recording issue. If the Recording LED stays on continuously, contact Support.

Note: The Wi-Fi and Alarm LED indicators are not used when troubleshooting connectivity issues and can be ignored during this process.

Step 4: Verify the SIM Card Is Seated Properly

Ensure that the SIM card is fully seated in the SIM card slot. The SIM card compartment can be accessed using the Torx T6 screwdriver included with the dash camera hardware kit.

If reseating the SIM card does not resolve the issue, the camera's connection settings must be verified using the Titan application.

If you need Titan login credentials, please contact support@smartasset.biz.
